VHS // Rushes to Wherever

This single was done in an attempt to be part of a work in video form of a friend (that deserves appreciation for her motivation to experiment with this composition – thank you Sara Coelho). I was asked to approach the topics of nostalgia, the past and family. Only after the work had been concluded, and almost three months after that, I came to understand the impact this song had on me.

My apprenticeship process of music as an adolescent consisted in its majority in listening to melodies in order to play them on the guitar. To play with them, stir them, change them, adapt them, arrange them, experiment with them. As a guitarist I have been developing my melodic capacities for a long time. It is funny that by growing up and creating a music project in which I focus more on harmony, I regain myself in what marked a great part of my developing process as an artist. That explains two things: the appearance of the guitar solos or melodic parts (whatever you may call them) in “VHS” over the accompaniment; the B side of this single.

I decided to experiment launching a representation of what I have learned. I practiced as a guitarist and a musician in my youth – most of the time that would be to pick up a harmony that I like, one that spins around my head, I would put it in loop and experiment with the biggest quantity of melodies that I could; which could take hours…

The choice of the song came from a single idea that I didn’t reconsider (and fortunately so, because had I tried to choose, I would have quit). “Rushes To” is a great song and the only wish I could express to change the experience of it would be to have Frank’s voice on it. I draw on the recent launch of the albums Endless and Blonde to pay a tribute to an artist I admire. But this B-side is only that. I don’t wish it to be of importance in the development of my project. I believe this is an honest way of displaying my work and it serves only to accompany the single.

Another thing that has had an impact on me when talking about “VHS” more recently is that I have been negligent in terms of producing and composing. Since the beginning of July I haven’t concluded anything. What will come next I do not know; but I will start to create again and I hope to keep doing so for a long time.

In accordance with the topic of VHS I pretend to dedicate it to a few people:
 To my mother, my father, my sister and my brother – who listened to Pink Floyd way too many times and were there. Always.
 To Ana Sofia Franco – who taught me a lot about what it means to be a person.
 To Filipe Duarte, João Vilar, Miguel Esteves, Rafael Teixeira – who were a big part of my growth as a musician.
 To Alexandre Ribeiro – who made me see that there is no wrong in having our own space to show what we’re capable of artistically.
